The Seattle Times: Local News: Final Washington state recount results: Gregoire by 130

The Seattle Times: Local News: Final Washington state recount results: Gregoire by 130: "After a bruising election and two recounts, Democrat Christine Gregoire emerged as the winner by a 130-vote margin in Washington state's astonishingly close governor's race.
Republican Dino Rossi won the first count by 261 votes, then watched his lead shrink to 42 after a machine recount. His supporters say the protracted governor's race is not over yet.
Gregoire's lead in the statewide hand recount widened from 10 to 130 today after a Supreme Court decision allowed King County to include 732 mistakenly rejected ballots. King County, home of Seattle and a Democratic stronghold, was the last county to report final recount results today. "

Hope its over now.

Yahoo! News - Wash. Officials Count Discarded Ballots

Yahoo! News - Wash. Officials Count Discarded Ballots: "On Wednesday, Gregoire moved ahead of Republican Dino Rossi for the first time in the roller-coaster race, seizing a mere 10-vote lead out of 2.9 million ballots cast statewide, after the results of the latest recount were reported.
Earlier that day, the state Supreme Court ruled that King County, the state's most populous county and a Democratic stronghold, could also count 732 belatedly discovered ballots. County officials planned to announce those results Thursday afternoon.
The Republicans have refused to concede the race, raising the possibility it could drag on for weeks. Gregoire, for her part, urged Rossi to abide by the results of the recount."

This isn't Florida. And it isn't November 2000.

Merle Braley's view: Beware the Fox

"Beware the Fox

Guard your news
and your chickens

Recognize the truths
from political spin

For you might loose
much more than a hen

- Merle Braley "

Fully agree. When I watched "Outfoxed", it reminded me a lot of George Orwell’s 1984 and the way it presented the definition of “truth” – no matter how often this station throws their slogan “fair & balanced” at me. The other likely comparison would be Karl-Eduard von Schnitzler’s “Der schwarze Kanal” on the former East German tv that excelled by taking news magazine reports about the western society out of context and giving them a tendentious spin. I would not be surprised if a study some day proved that this Murdoch station had a substantial impact on the outcome of this year’s presidential election.

Hitler was chosen as Time magazine's Man of the Year for 1938

Hitler was chosen as Time magazine's Man of the Year for 1938: "On January 2, 1939, Time Magazine published its annual Man of the Year issue. For the year 1938, Time had chosen Adolf Hitler as the man who 'for better or worse' (as Time founder Henry Luce expressed it) had most influenced events of the preceding year. The cover picture featured Hitler playing 'his hymn of hate in a desecrated cathedral while victims dangle on a St. Catherine's wheel and the Nazi hierarchy looks on.'"

Monday, December 20, 2004 - Grading the president - Dec 20, 2004 - Grading the president - Dec 20, 2004: "With Iraq, it's difficult to imagine that historians will give him anything but poor marks. Bush took the country to war on false intelligence. His defenders will say a President has to go with the information he has and the advice he receives. But that's a cop-out.
The greatest Presidents have been those who demonstrated astute judgment in times of crisis--often despite the advice they were getting. Bush was told that 140,000 troops would be sufficient for the occupation of Iraq. This turned out to be wrong. As Truman said, the buck stops here.
Success in past U.S. conflicts has not been strictly the result of military leadership but rather the judgment of the President in choosing generals and setting broad strategy."

MSNBC - Rumsfeld under fire for handling of Iraq

MSNBC - Rumsfeld under fire for handling of Iraq: "I was very, very disappointed no, let me put it stronger I was angry by the words of the secretary of defense when he laid it all on the Army, as if he, as the secretary of defense, didnt have anything to do with the Army and the Army was over there doing it themselves, screwing up, Schwarzkopf said.
Schwarzkopf, a registered independent who campaigned for Bush in the last two presidential elections, has previously criticized Rumsfeld on several occasions as arrogant and out of touch with troops on the ground. "

"Hoooo-rah! Rummy finally got called on the carpet."

Druckversion - Rumsfeld: Lost in a Masquerade - Politik - SPIEGEL ONLINE: "Not by the president, of course, but by troops fighting in Iraq. Some of them are finally fed up enough to rumble about his back-door draft and failure to provide them with the proper armor for their Humvees, leaving them scrambling to improvise with what they call 'hillbilly armor.'"
"Rummy met with troops at Camp Buehring, named for Chad Buehring, an Army colonel who died last year when insurgents in Baghdad launched a rocket-propelled grenade into Al Rasheed, a Green Zone hotel once frequented by Western journalists and administration officials that is still closed to guests because - despite all the president's sunny bromides about resolutely prevailing - security in Iraq is relentlessly deteriorating.

As Joe Biden told Aaron Brown of CNN about his visit to Falluja, "They got the biggest hornets' nest, but the hornets have gone up and set up nests other places." He said that a general had run up to him as he was getting into his helicopter to confide, "Senator, anybody who tells you we don't need forces here is a G.D. liar."

Rummy, however, did not hesitate to give the back of his hand to soldiers about to go risk their lives someplace he didn't trouble to go.

He treated Thomas Wilson - the gutsy guardsman from Tennessee who asked why soldiers had "to dig through local landfills for pieces of scrap metal and compromised ballistic glass to up-armor our vehicles, and why don't we have those resources readily available to us?" - as if he were a pesky Pentagon reporter. The defense chief used the same coldly cantankerous tone and squint he displays in press briefings, an attitude that long ago wore thin. He did everything but slap the kid in the hospital bed.

In one of his glib "Nothing's perfect," "Freedom's untidy" and "Stuff happens" maxims, Rummy told the soldier: "As you know, you go to war with the Army you have."

It wouldn't make a good Army slogan, and it was a lousy answer, especially when our kids are getting blown up every day in a war ginned up on administration lies. Remember when the president promised in the campaign that the troops would have all the body armor they needed?"

Nicely put, Ray!

Q&A: Light the birthday candles for Lotus Notes: "What's very clear is that Notes has transitioned into a cash cow; it's not at the leading edge of their initiatives. Workplace is at the leading edge, and they would like to, for very pragmatic business reasons, sell more DB2 and sell more Websphere and the things that they regard as more contemporary technologies than Notes. So I think you'll see a lot of marketecture that unifies two architectures, and you'll see active selling efforts on the newer stuff. The older stuff will gracefully stabilize. "
