How many?

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing.

He concludes by saying: "Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously watching as the President sits, head in hands.

Finally, the President looks up and asks, "How many is a brazillion?"

The Seattle Times: Opinion: Why can't we be more like Finland?

"Finland is a leading example of the northern European view that a successful, competitive society should provide basic social services to all its citizens at affordable prices or at no cost.

This isn't controversial in Finland; it's taken for granted. For a patriotic American like me, the Finns present a difficult challenge: If we Americans are so rich and so smart, why can't we treat our citizens as well as the Finns treat theirs?">The Seattle Times: Opinion: Why can't we be more like Finland?

"Wall Street Journal": Say it Slowly - Zukunftsangst - Politik - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten: "Everyone is terrified of everyone. As if of its own accord, the word 'fear' attaches itself to the word 'future' -- Zukunftsangst permeates the German mind. Fear of reform, fear of stagnation, fear of a failure of democracy and now -- as the frantic climax of this collective neurosis -- the fear of a further growth of fear."

Einfach unglaublich!

This is the great thing about ...

Pudget Sound Posted by Picasa

... the area we live in:

Ice caves Posted by Picasa
You can hike on mountains and walk the beach on the same day.

The ice caves on the picture above are quite fascinating. Even in late summer, there is permanently this formation of ice. It really gets noticeably colder as you approach the ice! It was a fun hike anyway.

New Orleans: United States of Shame - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News: "Stuff happens.

And when you combine limited government with incompetent government, lethal stuff happens."

"W. drove his budget-cutting Chevy to the levee, and it wasn't dry. Bye, bye, American lives. "I don't think anyone anticipated the breach of the levees," he told Diane Sawyer."

"Who on earth could have known that Osama bin Laden wanted to attack us by flying planes into buildings? Any official who bothered to read the trellis of pre-9/11 intelligence briefs.

Who on earth could have known that an American invasion of Iraq would spawn a brutal insurgency, terrorist recruiting boom and possible civil war? Any official who bothered to read the C.I.A.'s prewar reports.

Who on earth could have known that New Orleans's sinking levees were at risk from a strong hurricane? Anybody who bothered to read the endless warnings over the years about the Big Easy's uneasy fishbowl."

Wonder who doesn't see a pattern here?

"

What a mess! - This is really bad timing for a discussion that would be worth having - once people in the Gulf Coast region literally have their head above water again.
